On 26 April 2006, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to establish Data Protection Day, celebrated annually on 28 January. Data Protection Day is now celebrated worldwide and is called " Privacy Day " outside Europe.
The 16th Data Protection Day will be celebrated worldwide on 28 January 2022. It aims to raise public awareness of the right to data protection. The Council of Europe, which initiated this important day, continues to play a major role in encouraging and highlighting the events organised around the world on 28 January.
Celebrated every year on the same date, Data Protection Day marks the anniversary of the opening for signature of the Convention 108Convention 108, the flagship data protection Convention. Last year, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Convention 108. For over 40 years, Convention 108 has influenced and shaped privacy and data protection in Europe and beyond. Its modernised version (known as Convention 108+) will continue to do so.
The main objective of this day is to raise public awareness of the challenges of data protection, and to inform everyone about their rights and how they can exercise them. In this spirit, the Convention 108 Committee will be awarding this year's first Stefano Rodotà AwardThe Convention 108 Committee will take advantage of the opportunity to present the first annual Convention 108 Award to innovative and original academic research projects in the field of data protection. The Convention 108 Committee will use this special occasion to announce the winners.
